The County of San Luis Obispo has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team! We are looking for professional and motivated team members with experience as  Public Health Nutritionist I as a Lactation Consultant. Applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration and must have current status as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

Examples of Duties:

· Provide lactation consulting services via in-person, phone, or telehealth (as necessary due to Covid -19 precautions), at satellite WIC offices throughout the County of San Luis Obispo.

· Conduct individual breastfeeding assessments and counseling for WIC and non-WIC participants who have been referred by WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors, WIC staff hospital lactation staff and community partners. Support to lactating women with questions, concerns and problems.

· Develop individual care plans and complete required departmental documentation in the Peer Counseling Data Base and WIC WISE application.

· Issue electric breast pumps to WIC mothers and provide information on use of the departmental equipment.

· Provide breastfeeding education for prenatal WIC participants and community at large.

· Refer participants to appropriate community resources.

· In coordination with the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator will be expected to utilize State WIC approved curriculum, provide ongoing mentoring and training to WIC Breastfeed Peer Counselors and WIC staff, and assist in other aspects of the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor program as directed.

· Evaluate participant nutritional status, screen high risk and other participants, interpret medical information, develop individual nutritional care plans, and counsel on high risk factors and nutrition.

· Attend and participate in workshops and conferences to promote nutrition and breastfeeding for better public health.

 Public Health Nutritionist I is part of a career series for Public Health Nutritionist I and II. Classes in this series conduct, plan, and coordinate nutritional and breastfeeding services for the Community Based Comprehensive Perinatal Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (W.I.C.), and other public health care programs; provide consultative, educational, and technical services in the field of nutrition and breastfeeding; and do other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration

Must have current status as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

A valid California Driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Candidates bilingual in Spanish are preferred, but not required for this position.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics or Public Health Nutrition and one year of training in a dietetic internship approved by the American Dietetic Association. (A Masters Degree in foods and nutrition may be substituted for the internship program.)

Licenses and Certificates

Registration with the American Dietetic Association is required.

Certain positions within this classification may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
