Laboratory technician needed to work on a project investigating mechanisms of hearing and multisensory integration (neuronal signal processing and neural basis of behavior) in macaque monkeys. Duties include, but are not limited to: data analysis, engineering set-up and maintenance of computers and hardware, participation in behavioral/ neurophysiological experiments, training animals for various behavioral tasks, timely data entry, maintenance of neat and orderly records, handling of macaques, and other duties necessary for functioning of the laboratory. The individual must demonstrate a willingness to multitask and learn more advanced technical skills as required. The suitable candidate should be able to participate in the day-to-day operations of studies (data collection and analysis).
The ideal applicant will have previous experience with engineering and/or programming, and an interest in neuroscience research. Any prior experience in electrophysiology, or instrumental training of animals is a major plus. The position requires excellent communication skills, and large amounts of patience. Must be willing to work some weekends and holidays, and overtime as required, as well as participate in training and occupational health and safety programs. Employees must be able to effectively follow complex oral and written instructions. The ideal applicant will demonstrate the ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and/or create new SOPs, and to interact with other personnel in a professional and courteous manner. Bachelor's degree with programming/engineering experience required. Enthusiasm for working closely with monkeys is necessary. Experience with MATLAB or LabView is highly desirable.

Key Function #1: Train new employees, incoming undergraduate and graduate personnel in laboratory procedures related to hardware, software, stimulus delivery and data analysis, and working with animals in a manner to comply with study standards and local and national regulations. 10% of time.
Train naive monkeys to perform complex behavioral tasks, i.e. to tolerate collars, to tolerate poles that mate to collars, to acclimate to capture via pole & collar technique, to release a lever as a behavioral report under complex circumstances, to sit in specialized audio chairs. Spend substantial time desensitizing primates to human presence. 20% of time
Modify existing software as needed for experimental requirements, create new scripts with MATLAB to do different aspects of stimulus delivery and data acquisition. Also modify hardware to permit changes in stimulus delivery and data acquisition as required. Calibrate stimuli as needed. Create new stimuli to test with Key Function #4. 20% of time
Conduct non-invasive electrophysiological measurements on sedated animal models. Collect behavioral data from awake and behaving subjects that were trained as part of function #3. Calibrate speakers and other relevant equipment prior to experiments to ensure accuracy of data. Record, compile, interpret, and present experimental data. Create tables & graphs that describe and display data. Attend weekly meetings discussing current projects and relevant articles of research in our field. 30% of time
Help with animal care and administrative things that help the lab run smoothly. These include but are not limited to ordering supplies and equipment, creating/modifying IACUC/IRB protocols, helping with surgical and non-surgical procedures and recovery of subjects, etc. 20% of time
