Position Summary:

Provide patient care and education related to lactation in inpatient or outpatient setting. Serve as a resource to physicians, nurses, patients, and other professionals regarding lactation. Serve as a role model for positive work environment and quality patient care. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and department policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.
Accountability:
PATIENT EDUCATION - Provide direct patient education for groups and individuals PATIENT CARE - Provide direct therapy services to patients on both an inpatient and outpatient basis; attend patient care meetings and provide education to patients and family members ASSESSMENT - Assess all breast-feeding mothers on the unit CONSULTANT - Assist and assess latch and positioning of baby at breast, pumping, and storage of breast milk EQUIPMENT - Coordinate all equipment and supplies for the specialty area; service malfunctioning equipment, develop inventory/stock PAR levels and order supplies; maintain adequate stock level PATIENT CARE - Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients as required PARTICIPATION - Participate in orientation; upon successful completion of preceptor training assume precepting and evaluation responsibilities of new personnel ENVIRONMENT - Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with Hospitals standards RESOURCE - Function as a resource to all assigned clinical educators and adjunct faculty, including top management, physicians, clinical nurse specialists, and/or others as appropriate KNOWLEDGE - Maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in the field in order to enhance expertise TRAINING - Provide in-service, continuing education for the clerical staff, being certain that they are made aware of changes in policies and procedures pertaining to their area DOCUMENTATION - Prepare documentation as required by the profession and the department CARE PLAN - Work in collaboration with the healthcare team, implement and document individualized care plans incorporating age specific considerations, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
Certification Requirements:
RN MATRIX - Complete and maintain unit/clinic based required certifications and competencies as listed in the department expectations/and or the unit/clinic education matrix
Education Requirements:
Nursing program (nationally accredited) graduate
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in State of New Mexico or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by State of New Mexico Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) or obtain w/i 19 months of position CPR Certification for Healthcare/BLS Providers or for Professional Rescuers or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position
Education Requirements - Preferred:
Nursing program (nationally accredited) graduate Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing
Experience Requirements - Preferred:
Bilingual English/Spanish 1 year directly related experience
Physical Demands Requirements:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
Licensure/Certification Requirements - Preferred:
Nationally Certified in area of specialty
Professional licensure as appropriate to the clinical objectives of the unit:
Nationally Certified in area of specialty
Testing Requirements:
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually Obtain UNMH IV Verification within 6 months of position
Working Conditions Requirements:
Sig Hazard: Chemicals, bio hazardous materials requiring extensive safety precautions and may require protective equipment
