Our unit specializes in caring for women throughout the childbearing cycle. Low and High Risk Obstetrical patients are evaluated and treated in Labor and Delivery during all phases of the childbearing cycle for management of a variety of clinical conditions. We care for healthy mothers with well babies, as well as for mothers with complex diseases and high risk pregnancies such as: preeclampsia, diabetes, multiple gestation, and fetal anomalies.
On our unit we have:
12 LDR (Labor and Delivery Rooms)
4 beds in the Triage Center
6 Maternal Special Care beds
Our focus is on creating a family-centered environment with a firm belief that patient safety should always come first. We involve our patients and their families in our bedside assessments and reports, as we strive to keep our patients involved as the most important member of the healthcare team. From the moment a patient arrives on our unit we demonstrate the mission of Vanderbilt: We Care, We Teach, We Learn, We deliver EXCELLENT CARE.
A typical shift for our nurses includes caring for high-risk maternal fetal medicine patients to low-risk midwife patients. Vanderbilt Labor and Delivery nurses provide comfort measures and support to mothers who have suffered intrauterine fetal death (IUFD), assist in vaginal delivery and recovery, participate as members of the obstetrical emergency team, care for high-risk antepartum patients, triage outpatients, and circulate in the operating room for cesarean birth and fetal surgery. The Center for Women's Health at Vanderbilt offers many outstanding programs for obstetrical patients including: midwifery care, interpretive services, on-staff lactation consultants, water labor tubs, fetal surgery, and nitrous oxide for labor analgesia
